Description

The Tonto National Forest, Arizona, embraces almost 3 million acres of rugged and spectacularly beautiful country, ranging from Saguaro cactus-studded desert to pine-forested mountains beneath the Mogollon Rim. This variety in vegetation and range in altitude (from 1,300 to 7,900 feet) offers outstanding recreational opportunities throughout the year, whether it's lake beaches or cool pine forest. As the fifth largest forest in the United States, the Tonto National Forest is one of the most-visited “urban” forests in the U.S. (approximately 5.8 million visitors annually). Its boundaries are Phoenix to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian reservations to the east.

Flatiron via Siphon Draw Trail is a very challenging day hike in the Superstition Mountains. It is full of tough scrambles and is recommended for seasoned hikers and scramblers only. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes. In recent years there have been several rock slides, and the upper part of the trail has been altered extensively. Please use precaution and follow signs. Reference the blue and white markers to help with navigating. Leaving from the parking area, you will travel up Siphon Draw Trail from the Siphon Draw trailhead. You will quickly pass the junction with Jacob Crosscut Trail before continuing on to Slick Rock and shortly thereafter Siphon Falls. Following this you will arrive at the saddle before making the last steep push to the summit. The views from the top are well worth it and a great place to stop for a much-needed break before heading back down.Show more

This trail follows treads along Horton Creek past waterfalls and winds through magnificent stands of pine. The parking area can be found just past upper Tonto Creek campground, look for the hiking sign pointing to the start of the trail. There is poor/no cell reception here so downloading the map beforehand can be helpful to get started and to navigate the intersecting trails in the area. From the parking lot the trail heads gradually up along Horton Creek with many waterfalls. The last mile has some significant elevation gain as it climbs past Horton Springs into rim country. Great area to combine other trails to form a loop hike – many will tag on Highline Trail #31 and Derrick Trail #33 for a nice loop. Show more

This trail is in a major flash flood area. Please check the weather forecast before planning your trip and be mindful of changing weather patterns. Short hike with wonderful views and the option to continue up to the Ellison Creek Cascades. If you're in the area it's worth the trip. There is no official trail. It's more a trail of use that skirts away from Water Wheel campgrounds. Show more

This trail allows dogs, but users have reported that the upper part of the trail may be difficult for a dog to navigate. The rock scrambling sections are not suitable nor safe for dogs. Users recommend bringing plenty of water as it is easy to get dehydrated on this hike. Many sections of this trail are exposed. Show more
