The name says it all: drinking water is extracted in the Amsterdam Waterleidingduinen. But it is also one of the few nature reserves where you can roam. Down the paths, into the groves! You will find an inner dune edge with jagged oak, crackling softwood, expansive open dune decorated with hawthorn, rabbits, flower fields and water features full of ducks and other scum. The dunes also contain 500 roe deer and 1,000 fallow deer. You can find them everywhere especially early in the morning and at dusk. A beautiful walking area, which is also very useful. Because up to 200,000,000 liters of water are extracted here daily; a million people in Amsterdam drink from it. Once the drinking water could still be scooped out of the canals. However, Cholera emerged and from the sixteenth century onwards water had to be taken from the Vecht by ship. An enlightened spirit came up to extract groundwater in the dunes and in 1853 the water pipeline was ready. The walk comes from the book Waterrijk Nederland. At the entrance is a catering facility and a bus stop of line 80 of Connexion. You need a ticket to enter the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. It costs €1.50.
